Learn how to Differentiate your Instruction at many levels.

Differentiated Instruction is a philosophy that enables teachers to plan strategically in order to reach the needs of diverse learners in the classrooms today.  Differentiated instruction in not a set of tools, but a philosophy that teacher embraces to reach the unique needs of every learner.---Carolyn Chapman

Differentiated Instruction means changing the pace, level, or kind of instruction you provide in response to individual learner's needs, styles, or interests.  It specifically responds to students' progress on the learning continuum-what they already know and what they need to learn.  It responds to their best ways of learning and allows them to demonstrate what they've learned in ways that capitalize on their strengths and interests--Diane Heacox

Differentiation:

Students vary widely in their readiness and motivation to learn, and such diversity in today's classroom has implications for differences in teaching.  Instruction begins with where students are, not necessarily at the front of the book; what makes differentiation a difficult concept to work around is that students are all over the place! This introductory session is designed to help educators develop a basic level of comfort with the notion of differentiation. It will introduce the curricular concepts of content, process & product, as well as the student characteristics of readiness, interest and learning profile, and discuss ways to implement these in the classroom. A variety of strategies will be discussed.

There are several ways to Differentiate Instruction here are a few:

  • Through Content

  • Through Process

  • Interest Levels

  • Learning Profile

Principals of Differentiated Instruction

  • Teacher instructs around the essential concepts of a subject

  • Teacher focuses on student differences

  • Assessment is on-going and diagnostic (ASK process)

  • Content, Process, and product are modified in terms of readiness, interest, and profile.

  • Instruction is student-centered (what are you doing that, if the students did for themselves, they would benefit from the opportunity)

  • The Teacher is flexible.
